Out of the jaws of destruction...

When the Witchmen caused the earth to move and called forth the fires from the mountain’s inner depths, the Moon Maidens, Ahrmehnee, and Thoheeks Bili's troops barely escaped with their lives.

Driven by the flames into territory said to be peopled by monstrous half-humans, Bili was forced to choose between braving the dangers of nature gone mad or fighting the savage natives on their own ground. But before he could decide, his troops were spotted by the beings who claimed this eerie land as their own and would use powerful spells of magic and illusion to send any intruders to their doom…

The Death Of A Legend Horseclans Series Book 8 eBook Robert Adams

The author was so wrapped up in getting his political views presented to the reader that he forgot to focus on the writing. There were some sections in all of these books that were stellar segments of writing, but most of it was disjointed as he traveled through time from the future to his main characters past, and the transitions were not well done. He would have been better off writing two groups of novels - one a futuristic alternate earth story focused on his characters of the future, and the other a set of novels about living as a soldier during a war and surviving an apocalypse in that time frame. If he had written this as two separate books without the inserted political drivel, both would have been good - but with the confused disjointed jumping back and forth, it was a bitter disappointment. Especially as I had looked forward to reading novels that were about the characters from a short story about the Horseclans which I had previously read.
I am not sure if this one did it (I read the entire series since I had already bought them) but there was also a lot of repeating of earlier writing incorporated into later books that were something of the entirety of the Horseclans sections without any new material of substance about them. Some added new material to previously written sections or added the same story line from a different point of view, but it was interspersed between sections on his other topic.

Fills in a lot of info on Bili the axe
And his life in the Confederation and his wife and life
a short novel for the price, and the author uses flash backs so that he can directly use whole paragraphs from the previous novels
None
This book is good but not the best in series. Needed more polishing and focus. Too many diversions just ads things are getting interesting story shifts to another point
Chalk up another win in this installment of The Horseclans story. I really enjoyed the use of flashbacks that told some of Bili The Axe's past. He was quite the leader & warrior. I especially like the way he took control at the bridge & the way Milo (even if he was in disguise) deferred to Bili. The sword & axe work is written very well as are the entire battle sequences. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
The books are a great read. Unfortunately, the publisher did not employ a proofreader. Typos on every page. Very distracting. Also, the new covers are nice - but not accurate. Apparently, the artist did not read the characters' description BEFORE designing the covers.
As others have pointed out the Horseclans books are not exactly high literature. They're escapist, feel-good books that are quick reads. Particularly in the earlier novels in the series this has not been a problem. However, in the later books (8, 9, 10...) Adams spends so much text in "flashbacks" that he's barely providing any new content. No exaggeration in this book about 40% of the text came from earlier books in the series. I don't know if this was pur laziness or just a money grab, but if Adams were still alive I'd definitely write to give him my thoughts on the matter. Once you get past the copied text the newer writing is okay, but really not up to his previous writing (say, in books 1-3).
